Building Hatseflats

20080724

After three months, today was the day for the maiden sail. I cartopped 'TooPhat' to my old sailing club in Mijnsheerenland and rigged it on the waterside. The Topper sail looks tatty and baggy but I made it a bit flatter with the downhaul and the outhaul. The sailing went OK. The TopHat design is the same length and beam as the International Moths of the early Seventies but it is much more stable. Its ease of handling resembles the Optimist a bit but it is of course much larger and more suitable for adults. Going upwind I sat out on the rail. This felt quite strong. Downwind I heeled the boat to windward. Even when heeled to windward and sitting near the mast the boat felt quite secure. After 2130 hours the wind died down and I came ashore again. When I took the plug out of the transom there was (hardly) any water inside.
